Community Empties Library To Show Support


One of my classmates shared this fascinating news article. A community in Stony Stratford, England is attempting to fight the closure of their library ….. by checking out all 16,000 items!

Today, as they celebrated the empty shelves, Emily Malleson from Friends of Stony Stratford Library (FOSSL) said they were amazed at how everyone in the town had pulled together.

She said it was calculated that books were being checked out at a rate of around 378 per hour – smashing the usual rates.

I’m not sure how this will help put more money into the library system’s budget — unless everyone kept their items late and paid fines.  But this definitely sends a message that having a  library is very  important to this community, and I am sure the administration is now making more of an effort to consider other options to enable services to continue. Perhaps they would benefit from implementing a vending machine too.
